For me, one of the keys to a solid round is a consistent, repetitive pre-shot routine. Not only does it mean that I am prepared for each shot, but it also means I am focused on my game as a whole. It means I am avoiding distractions and silly mental errors. I am not saying that you will suddenly become a scratch golfer, but it can do great things to your score. I found the following excerpt from a club pro to be quite helpful:
When you see a good golf swing it looks pretty simple, but there are a lot of things happening there. One of the things that really makes a difference on the golf course, in handling all the situations that come up, and there are a lot of situations that come up, is doing everything the same. Golf is a game of repetition. I want you to watch on the weekend, or whenever you are watching a tournament on TV, and watch how the expert players seem to do everything the same over the ball. The routine of how you get started is something that you need to practice on the practice tee. I am not saying that you have to have exactly the same steps as someone else, but I want to point out a couple of very important attributes about a pre-shot routine. These are the things that I want you to be able work on on the practice tee. When you take it to the course and you are feeling pressure, you know that you can get the club started, you know that you can make a good swing, because you are on auto-pilot, you make it happen every time the same. Those two components are: Before I start, I am going to make a meaningful practice swing looking at the target, in other words I am visualizing the shot; and a meaningful practice swing means I am feeling my swing as it is associated with that shot. Now when I go through that routine again I want you to notice that every time I want to take the same amount of time. I have a couple of waggles and a couple of looks, and before I get started I am making that swing. I am going to try to do that on the course on every single shot. It should take the same amount of time, it should have the same amount of steps. You will find that the repetition on the golf course of your shots is going to increase and that is what we are all looking for. I tee it up, look at where I am going, assess how the wind is blowing, I see where I want to go, as I stand besides the ball I am making that meaningful practice swing. I can picture the shot in my head. I have made that swing; that is the swing I am going to take. Same amount of steps. For me it is right foot, left foot, waggle. Look, one more look, same amount of time. Repetition in golf is everything on the course and a pre-shot routine allows you to repeat.
